Presentation Overview: Prevalence, burden, impact of the diabetes epidemic. What is being done nationally and locally.
Tracie Heavner, MPH Director of Diabetes Prevention Program:
Tracie grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago. After getting married in 1989, moved around the Midwest with husband’s career while raising two sons, Alec and Max. While in Miami, FL completed B.S. degree from Barry University, then worked as a PE Teacher in Sunrise, FL until 2008 when relocated with husband’s job to Greensboro, NC. While working as a PE teacher in south Florida, became concerned with the state of health of my students. In 2007 began a Master’s degree in Public Health with research interest and specializing in childhood obesity and health disparities. Graduated with MPH in 2009 after completing internship with the American Heart Association in Greensboro focusing work on health disparities.
In 2013, took current position as Director of YMCA of Greensboro’s Diabetes Prevention Program. In 2012, YMCA of Greensboro was awarded one of the first CDC grants to start the Diabetes Prevention Program. Since our first classes in 2012, we have had 91 participants in the program; our program has surpassed national averages for the program in weight loss percentage (our participants have lost more than 600 pounds collectively); high attendance rates (88% for the one-year program), and we continue to launch new classes both on-site and YMCA’s and off-site at worksites. Outside of work, Tracie is an avid road cyclist and leads beginner rides for new cyclist, and is and a board member and co-chair’s fundraising cycling event with B.I.G. (Bicycling In Greensboro) which is a volunteer-run, grassroots advocacy organization, focused on improving conditions for, and awareness of, bicycling throughout the Greater Greensboro area through advocacy, alliances, education, events, and service, with the ultimate goals of safe and convenient bicycling for transportation, recreation, health, environmental quality, and energy independence.
